    Landing Mechanics for Youth Soccer Players: Deceleration Coaching Cues That Prevent ACL Injuries

    Most youth soccer ACL injuries happen during landings — not collisions. Teaching players to land 'soft' with bent knees and hip control is the most direct intervention. Here are the coaching cues and drills that change the pattern.

    Most parents and coaches think ACL injuries happen from tackles. In youth soccer, they mostly don't. Roughly 70% of ACL injuries are non-contact — the player plants, pivots, jumps, or lands, and the knee collapses inward. No opponent required.

    This is both the problem and the opportunity. Because if the injury mechanism is the player's own landing pattern, then changing that pattern — through coaching cues and practice — can prevent the injury entirely.

    What a Safe Landing Looks Like vs. What You Usually See

    The 6 Coaching Cues for Safe Landing

    These cues work in sequence — each phase of the landing has a specific focus. Teach them in order: before players can automate the full landing pattern, they need to feel each phase individually.

    On takeoff

    CUE: Push through the whole foot, not just the toes. Generate upward force through ankle, knee, and hip extension.

    Common error: Rising onto tiptoes before push-off — reduces power and creates ankle instability

    In the air

    CUE: Keep the core tight. Begin to bend the knees slightly before contact — pre-load the landing position.

    Common error: Fully extended limbs at the moment of landing — leads to stiff-knee contact

    Initial contact

    CUE: Land on the balls of the feet, not the heels. The ball-of-foot contact allows the calf and ankle to absorb the first portion of force.

    Common error: Heel-first landing — sends force straight to the knee and hip with no muscle absorption

    CUE: Knees bent to at least 45° at initial contact. Knees track directly over the 2nd toe — not collapsing inward.

    Hip and trunk

    CUE: Hinge at the hip — trunk forward of vertical, not upright. The hip hinge loads the posterior chain (hamstrings, glutes) to share the landing force.

    CUE: Sink into the landing position over 0.3–0.5 seconds, not instantly. The slower the deceleration, the lower the peak force on each joint.

    4 Drills to Train the Pattern

    Knowing the cues isn't enough — the landing pattern must be drilled until it becomes automatic. These four drills progress from controlled to game-specific and can be done in any warm-up in 8–10 minutes.

    Stick the Landing

    3 × 5 landings

    Jump from two feet, land on two feet. Hold the landing position for 3 seconds. Check alignment: knees bent 45°+, knees over toes, hips hinged, balanced.

    Progression: Two-foot → one-foot landing. Jump → land and immediately hold. Box jump with hold.

    Drop Landing from a Box

    3 × 5 each height

    Step off a low box (12–18 inches), land on both feet. Focus on soft landing with good alignment. This removes the jump power variable — the player focuses purely on landing form.

    Progression: Low box → medium box. Two-foot land → single-leg land. Add a lateral direction change after landing.

    Broad Jump with Freeze

    3 × 4 jumps

    Jump forward as far as possible, land on two feet. Freeze completely for 3 seconds. The forward momentum makes it harder to stick — trains deceleration control.

    Progression: Two-foot broad jump → single-leg hop and hold → continuous broad jumps with quality check on each landing.

    Heading Simulation Landing

    3 × 6 header-and-land sequences

    Jump to head an imaginary ball (or actual ball with a coach feeding it). Land and immediately reset for the next movement. Simulates the actual game context where landing is followed by immediate action.

    Progression: Bilateral jump → unilateral land. Add a direction change after the header. Add a defender approaching.

    Female players need more repetitions

    Female players tend to show more knee valgus and less knee flexion during landing compared to male players — a pattern that worsens under fatigue. The interventions work, but female players may need more practice repetitions to automate the new pattern, and the pattern must be reinforced throughout the season, not just in pre-season. The ACL risk window for female players peaks at age 14–17 — this is when the most focused landing mechanics coaching should occur.

    Integrating Landing Mechanics Into Every Session

    Warm-up (every session): Stick-the-landing drill: 5 reps two-foot, 3 reps each one-foot. Takes 2 minutes. Primes the neuromuscular pattern before training.
    Strength sessions: Box drops + broad jump with freeze. Do these after the main warm-up, before heavy lifting.
    Pre-match: Heading simulation landing drill: 6 reps. Activates the pattern before aerial challenges in the match.
    Fatigue training: Schedule a set of landings at the END of a hard session occasionally. Players must maintain mechanics when tired — this is when game injuries happen.

    Landing mechanics training doesn't require equipment, specialist coaching, or extra session time — just two minutes built into every warm-up. Over a full season of three sessions per week, that's 90 minutes of ACL-prevention neuromotor training that costs nothing and adds up to a meaningfully safer player.
